The European Commission has launched a new online dispute resolution (ODR) platform for consumers and traders. The aim of the platform, established under the Online Dispute Resolution Regulation (524/2013/EU), is to be a single point of entry for the fast, low-cost, out of court settlement of disputes relating to online purchases of goods or services, by enabling parties to agree on an appropriate alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provider. The platform went live on 15 February 2016, and online trades established in the EU must now include an easily-accessible link to the ODR platform – which is found at http://ec.europa.eu/odr – on their websites, together with their email address. Traders are not, however, compelled to use the ODR platform, and can avoid ADR by failing to agree to a provider.
