A New York judge recently approved the service of legal papers through Facebook, CNN reports.

When instituting a lawsuit, a copy of the complaint and summons must be given to the defendant. This is typically done through certified mail — and the Rules of Civil Procedure provide for alternative measures, when needed. However, Facebook was not contemplated when the rules were drafted decades ago.

In New York, a woman had been trying to sue her husband for divorce for several years but had been unable to serve him with a copy of the complaint and summons through “normal means.” So, she received permission from the court to serve him a copy of the papers through his Facebook account.

Sometimes, when a business attempts to collect on money owed to it, locating the debtors can be difficult. With this ruling, it just got a whole lot easier.
