The Assembly of the Representatives of the People (ARP) adopted on the 15th of April 2015, during a plenary meeting, the bill No 74/2013 regarding electricity production from renewable sources (projet de loi n°74/2013 relatif à la production de l'électricité à partir des énergies renouvelables).

Electricity production from renewable sources became a necessity and not a choice, due to the worsening of the energy deficit in Tunisia, the 5% annual increase of the demand in electricity and the decline in domestic electricity production following the decrease in oil production and the cessation of exploration and development operations.

According to the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG), renewable sources account for only 4% of the total of the national electricity production. To overcome this deficiency, the law No 74/2013 should cover 30% of the Tunisian electricity production by 2030.

This law aims to boost investments in the electricity sector, create 10 thousand jobs and reduce the debt of the STEG. Furthermore it aims to preserve the environment, through an estimated decrease of atmospheric pollutant emissions of 38 million tons.
