In June, the Competition Bureau released a draft updated version of its Intellectual Property Enforcement Guidelines (IPEGs), which is open for public consultation until August 10, 2015. The updates focus on issues surrounding settlements in PM(NOC) cases, standard essential patents, and the activities of patent assertion entities.

The IPEGs, which were first released in 2000, provide the Bureau’s approach to the interface between competition policy and intellectual property rights. The June, 2015 amendments are the second phase of a two-phase update. In the first phase, released in September, 2014, the IPEGs were amended to reflect, among other things, the 2009 amendments to the Competition Act.
