On 28 April 2015, the European Parliament voted in favor of amending a regulation, making it mandatory for all new models of passenger cars and light vans intended for sale in the EU to be equipped with the eCall system starting on 31 March 2018. The eCall system is designed to provide rapid emergency assistance to passengers involved in serious road accidents. With this new system, wireless devices fitted into new vehicles will automatically trigger a distress signal to the 112 emergency call number in case of an accident or emergency. A minimum set of data, which includes the type of vehicle, the fuel used, the time of the accident, the exact location and the direction of the vehicle, will then be transmitted to the nearest emergency center. The infrastructure that will support the eCall system should be in place by 1 October 2017. The regulation will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
