Today is an “unofficial” federal holiday — Data Privacy Day! The Day is focused on raising awareness among both companies and individuals about privacy concerns with personal data. The Day has been recognized by Congress in the past but is more-formalized in the European Union.
Traditionally on this day various vendors release studies about how personal data is used (or misused). Several articles discuss these studies, such as this new one: http://www.zdnet.com/article/experian-releases-troubling-survey-for-data-privacy-day/.
There’s no specific “action steps” a company or individual should take today. But it is a gentle reminder of the importance of privacy within your organization — for example, the importance of employee privacy and customer privacy. Sometimes, gentle reminders like this are more helpful than more-direct reminders (such as complaints and lawsuits). So, spend a few minutes thinking about data privacy today — it’s worth it!
