The TIPO accepted 18,059 new patent applications in Q3 2015, a decrease of 6.0% from the same period last year.  Among the applications, 10,946 were invention patent applications, a decrease of 4.4% from the same period in 2014.  The number of invention patent applications filed by foreign applicants increased 0.4% to 6,856, while the number of applications filed by domestic applicants decreased 11.4% to 4,090.

Surveying the nationality of foreign applicants for invention patent applications indicates that Japan ranked first with 3,106 applications, followed by the U.S. (1,768), South Korea (446), China (354) and Germany (339).  The applications by U.S. and Germany grew 9.2% and 13.0%, respectively.
