On 22 June, the EU issued a statement that it is “determined to adopt, if necessary, targeted restrictive measures” against persons responsible for “acts of violence and repression and serious human rights violations”. The potential restrictive measures may also be imposed on persons that hinder the “search for a political solution” within the framework put forward by the African Union and East African Community. This statement follows news that President Nkurunziza plans to run for a third term in office.
