After more than four years of negotiation and various “false dawns”, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has finally been approved. The European Parliament adopted the final text of the GDPR on 14 April – this is the final legislative step. The text of the GDPR needs to be published in the OJEU and it will take effect 20 days from this publication. The two year “transition” period will then be triggered, which means that the new law will enter into force and organisations will need to comply with it from May/June 2018.
