EDPS has published its opinion on meeting the challenges of Big Data. It outlines the main challenges, opportunities and risks of Big Data, and how important it is that companies processing large volumes of personal data implement innovative methods to comply with data protection laws. It identifies four elements that responsible and sustainable development of Big Data must rely on:

  • organisations being much more transparent about how they process personal data;
  • users having a higher degree of control over how their data is used;
  • user friendly data protection being part of products and services; and
  • organisations becoming more accountable for what they do.

EDPS recognises the additional challenge of balancing the desire for innovation with the need to protect fundamental data protection rights. (Source: EDPS Seeks New Debate on Big Data)
