Following a CBI investigation from 2009 to 2012, on 1 December, CBI imposed a fine of €105,000 on Provident. The investigation found that in respect of 117 loans provided by Provident's Letterkenny office, Provident breached its obligation to act in the best interest of consumers.  In particular, it did not meet all its requirements set out in section 99 of Consumer Credit Act 1995 and regulation 19 of European Communities (Consumer Credit Agreement) Regulations 2005.
