The Government’s temporary limit on the number of non-EU migrants entering the UK for work purposes has now come into force and will remain in effect until March 2011. The limit is an interim measure until the Government’s lower limit will be announced next year following further consultation. Under the new interim limit, only 5,400 unskilled migrant workers who have not yet received an offer of employment will be allowed to enter the country. The limit also allows up to 18,700 skilled migrant workers with a job offer to enter the country. The social impact of the limit is to be reviewed by the Government’s independent advisers, the Migration Advisory Committee.
