The European Commission (EC) conditionally approved the proposed acquisition of Lafarge of France by Holcim of Switzerland. The EC's investigation revealed that the merged entity would have faced insufficient competitive pressure from remaining players in a significant number of markets in the European Economic Area. This would have brought a risk of price increases. The EC's approval is therefore conditional upon the divestment of Lafarge's businesses in Germany, Romania and the United Kingdom and of Holcim operations in France, Hungary, Slovakia, Spain and the Czech Republic. Holcim and Lafarge will not be allowed to close their deal until the EC has approved the buyer(s) of the assets put up for sale. Janine Simpson andDaryl Dingley represented the merger parties in obtaining approval from the South African Competition Commission.
