Over 30 organisations have come together to create The Internet of Things Security Foundation (IoTSF), a collaborative initiative aimed at promoting the security of smart devices.

The surge in popularity of the internet of things (IoT) has highlighted two areas of concern:

  • Security: businesses should be live to the threat of cyber attacks and employ appropriate security measures to protect data; and
  • Privacy: users should know what data, including personal data, is collected and how it is used.

Officially launched on 23 September 2015, IoTSF seeks to address these areas of concern by vetting smart devices at hardware level for security flaws. Members will be educated about ways to secure devices to help create a minimum security standard for smart devices.

IoTSF encourages organisations committed to securing products and services to join the initiative and help "drive IoT security excellence". It is hoped that a greater emphasis on security will help to grow the IoT market across all sectors and allow consumers and business to feel safe using smart devices.
