The crude oil pipeline connecting Myanmar’s western coast and China’s south-western Yunan province (which we covered in our September 2014 Myanmar postcard) has officially been opened, along with a deep sea port. The US$ 2.45 billion port and pipeline project – a joint venture between state owned China National Petroleum Corporation and Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise – also includes a gas pipeline that runs parallel to the crude oil pipeline and began operating in early 2014. China is set to complete an affiliated refinery in Yunan province later this year. How plummeting crude oil prices will affect investment into Myanmar’s oil and gas sector remains to be seen.
