This article provides an update on the most relevant political activities that occurred on May, 2016 in Costa Rica.

New Congress:

On May 1st, the new Congress was elected, appointing the presidency to Antonio lvarez, representing Partido Liberacin Nacional (National Liberation Party).

Negotiations:

The Alliance, with Partido Unidad Social Cristiana's (Social Christian Unity Party) leadership, agreed on several issues regarding expenditure control, fiscal stability and economic stimulation measures. Tax reform projects were not included.

President's speech:

President Luis Guillermo Sols, reported the main achievements of his second year at office. The speech covered 13 major topics, highlighting justice, education, social security, and poverty reduction. Within the production and competitiveness subject, he stands out the following topics:

  • The Government submitted two bills to Congress to modernize all land border check points and progressively introduce trade simplification in institutional processes.
  • The total flow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) reached USD$2,850 million. On employment terms, 23 new projects created 12,000 new direct jobs.
  • The arrival of tourists increased by 5.5% compared to 2014; the arrival of new flights and airlines was also emphasized.
  • The Ministerio de Comercio Exterior (Ministry of Foreign Trade) created 3 departments, which aims to strength policies and actions to improve the link between international trade and national production ecosystems and their institutions.
