The Legal Ombudsman has published a report about its activities in relation to Claims Management Companies (CMC).  Since the Legal Ombudsman’s CMC service opened for complaints in January, more than 9,000 have been received, 94 per cent of which were about CMCs dealing with financial product claims.  These include mis-sold mortgages, investments and interest rate swaps; but the majority (88 per cent) were about mis-sold Payment Protection Insurance.  Around 40 per cent of the complaints investigated were about CMC costs including unjustified fees, a failure to refund upfront fees and contractual disputes over fees.  The Legal Ombudsman also states that sometimes CMCs make claims more complicated as a result of unjustified fees, delays and poor advice.
