President Barack Obama has announced a host of new privacy and cybersecurity proposals. These include introducing new legislation to provide a single national standard with the aim of clarifying and strengthening the obligations companies have to notify customers when their personal information has been exposed. Additionally, President Obama said he is introducing a “Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights,” which will set out principles that look at the context in which data is collected and used. In relation to cybersecurity, new legislation will encourage the private sector to share appropriate cyber threat information with government, by providing targeted liability protection for companies that share information with certain government   entities, and will modernise tools to investigate, disrupt and prosecute cybercrime.
