On September 8th 2016 Cambodia finalized the process of accession to the Patent Cooperation Treaty and will be bound by the treaty as of December 8th 2016. PCT helps in obtaining international protection for an invention by allowing for the filing of one “international application” made to the national authorities which may lead to patent protection in any of the other contracting states. This will allow Cambodian nationals and residents too to seek patent protection internationally through a single “international application” made to the Cambodian authorities.
Cambodia’s accession should prove beneficial by strengthening country’s IP environment, which, due to lack of funds and experience, has been lagging in terms of patent protection: no patent had ever been granted in the country until 2015. This development should be favorable to foster research and innovation in the country, as well as making the country more attractive to foreign investments.
