The Mortgage Credit Directive (2014/17/EU) (MCD) was implemented in the UK on 21 March 2016.

The MCD aims to improve consumer protection measures across the EU by introducing an EU-wide framework of conduct rules for mortgage firms. Commissioner Jonathan Hill, responsible for Financial Stability, Financial Services and the Capital Markets Union, said: "This is an important step in improving consumer information and encouraging responsible lending. The EU passport regime for credit intermediaries will increase the sector's competitiveness and should also offer new business opportunities."
