On 23 March 2015, Asem Elgawhary (former principal vice president of Bechtel and general manager at Power Generation Engineering and Services Company (a joint venture between Bechtel and EEHC)), was sentenced for accepting kickbacks to manipulate the competitive bidding process for state-run power contracts in Egypt. Mr Elgawhary pleaded guilty to mail fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering,  and  obstruction  and  interference  with  the  administration of the tax laws. Mr Elgawhary accepted a total of US $5.2 million from three different power companies who made these payments to obtain a competitive and unfair advantage in the bidding process.
