According to statistics released by the Taiwan Intellectual Property office (“TIPO”), 16,649 patent applications were filed in the first quarter of 2016, a 3.32 % decrease from the same quarter last year, of which 10,306 (-2.08%) were for invention patents, 4,551 (-7.07%) for utility model patents, and 1,792 (- 0.39% ) for design patents. 

Regarding applications for invention patent, 3,505 (-11.65%) were filed by domestic applicants and 6,801 (+3.71%) were filed by foreign applicants.  The top five applicants nationality-wise for invention patent were Japan (3,375), the United States (1,645), South Korea (416), Germany (313), and China (264).  The top five domestic corporations filing invention patents were AU Optronics (74), Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) (53), Acer (50), Hon Hai (48), and Ability Opto-Electronics Technology (38). The top five foreign corporations filing invention patents were Intel (151), Qualcomm (150), Toshiba (122), Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (105), and Hewlett-Packard Development Company (90).
