On May 15, the Italian Data Protection Authority (Garante per la protezione dei dati personali) issued a handbook covering the main areas related to the data protection in the employment context (the “Handbook”). The full text (in Italian) is available for download here.

Although the Handbook does not set forth binding rules, it constitutes an interesting tool for the stakeholders, as it represents a useful recognition of the existing privacy laws and regulations applicable to the employment relationships.

The Handbook, covering both public and private sectors, addresses, among other things, issues such as the use of badges in the workplace, remote monitoring, the use of internet and email by employees, video-surveillance and geo-location, as well as the processing of employees’ sensitive and biometric data.
