The FTC released a list of the top ten consumer complaints received by the bureau in the year 2011. The top ten include the following:

  1. Identity Theft
  2. Debt Collection Complaints
  3. Prizes, Sweepstakes, and Lotteries
  4. Shop-at-Home and Catalog Sales
  5. Banks and Lenders
  6. Internet Services
  7. Auto Related Complaints
  8. Imposter Scams
  9. Telephone and Mobile Services
  10. Advance-Fee Loans and Credit Protection/Repair

Of the more than 1.8 million complaints received by the FTC during 2011, the largest percentage represented by the categories above was 15%. The other categories represented 10% or less.
