This graphic shows the cost to business of fines imposed by the Information Commissioner in the last two years. Not surprisingly, the most expensive mistakes have been data security breaches. Fines, however, pale in comparison with commercial costs. This month Bradford Crown Court was told in the Andrew Skelton case that it cost £2m to rectify the issues caused by Skelton posting Morrisons’ sensitive and personal staff data on the internet and sending it to the press. More recently, of course, analysts have suggested this week that Ashley Madison, the dating site for married people who want to cheat on their spouse, may have to scrap its planned £130m London share flotation after being hacked. Ouch!
