Effective October 1st 2016, the minimum wage in Alberta will increase by $1.00 from $11.20/hour to $12.20/hour. Minimum wage will increase a further $1.40 to $13.60/hour on October 1, 2017, and by another $1.40 to $15/hour on October 1, 2018.
The current “liquor server rate” of $10.70/hour will also be abolished and liquor servers will be entitled to receive the same minimum wage as everyone else – $12.20/hour effective October 1, 2016.
Other changes that take effect on October 1, 2016 include the implementation of weekly minimum pay of $486 for a 40 hour work week and a monthly minimum pay of $2,316 for employees who are paid by the month.
Alberta employers should be mindful of the coming increases in minimum wage and implement any necessary changes.
