ESMA published a letter from the European Commission on the AIFMD passport on 19 January 2016. The European Commission has asked ESMA to complete its assessment of extending the passport to the regimes of the USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Canada, Isle of Man, Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Australia by 30 June 2016.

The letter also sets out that ESMA will produce another opinion on the functioning of the EU passport and the national private placement regimes once the AIFMD has been fully transposed.
