On 27 May 2011, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Janet Nepolitano announced the extension of TPS for Haiti beneficiaries. The extension is effective as of 23 July 2011 and allows TPS beneficiaries to remain in the United States for an additional 18 months, through 22 January 2013. The designation of TPS for eligible Haitian nationals who had continuously resided in the United States since 12 January 2010 was originally announced by Secretary Napolitano in January of 2010 and became effective on 21 January 2010. In addition, DHS' re-designation of Haiti for TPS now permits eligible individuals who arrived up to one year after the earthquake in Haiti to receive the protection of TPS, such that those Haitians who have continuously resided in the United States since 12 January 2011 are eligible for TPS.
