The European Commission has announced its commitment to reducing the gender pay gap
in the EU. The average gender pay gap in the EU is reported to be 18 per cent.
The Commission has said it will use legislative and non-legislative means to tackle the issue and will consult widely on the effect of proposals such as strengthening sanctions for
breaches of equal pay legislation, reporting on the pay gap and encouraging gender equality
initiatives.
The Commission will publish a report on initiatives promoting gender equality in the workplace on 5 May, and, in the latter part of 2010, will announce the EU strategy for achieving gender equality for 2010-2015.
