The Minimum Wage Commission (“MWC”) is compiling a recommendation report on the Statutory Minimum Wage (“SMW”) rate and will submit this to the Chief Executive in Council by the end of October 2014. The MWC is tasked with balancing the need to sustain Hong Kong’s economic growth and competitiveness with preventing excessively low wages and minimizing the loss of low paid jobs.

A public consultation took place earlier this year on the SMW rate. It elicited strongly polarized views with some advocating a rise from the current rate of HKD30 per hour to HKD36 per hour and others urging that the current rate should be frozen for 2015.
