The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has issued an order suggesting that Google and other search engines might be required to remove from their search results links to sites displaying defamatory comments.  The court issued a permanent injunction ordering defendant Karl Steinborn to cease and desist from defaming, threatening, and extorting plaintiff Robert Gorman through a series of posts about him and his businesses, Reputation Changer and brand.com, on Twitter and the consumer complaint website Ripoff Report.  But the injunction also went further and stated that the plaintiff could “submit this Order to internet search engines, including but not limited to Google, to have this link removed from internet search results because of Defendant’s defamatory comments that can be seen at the link above, which defame Plaintiff both personally, and professionally.”
