[2009] LTLPI 27.4.10

Claimant consulted defendant GP complaining of pain in her buttocks and back after undergoing incision and drainage of a peri-anal abscess and placement of seton stitch at hospital. GP recorded external and internal drain from two separate sites in the anus. He attempted to cut and remove internal drain, however soon realised that there was actually only one drain.

Claimant alleged GP had been negligent in attempting removal rather than referring her to hospital. Liability admitted. Negligent early removal led to need for reinsertion procedure.

Claimant suffered immediate significant pain and mild discomfort while she waited for corrective surgery as well as anorectal leakage and flatulence.

Out of court settlement: £7,500 (General Damages).
