OK, I’ve anonymised all my data, so I’m good to go. Right?

Err… Not so fast.

With the development of clever data matching algorithms and analysis techniques, it is amazing what can potentially be done to ‘repersonalise’ apparently anonymised data. For example, comparing two or more data sets and identifying touch points from which personal information can be reconstructed or inferred.

The issue is of sufficient concern to have prompted the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) to publish a ‘Guide to big data and the Australian Privacy Principles‘.

The guide is a consultation draft, open for comment until 26 July. The guide and instructions for making comments on the draft can be found here.
