Government Contracts
A former high ranking official in the People’s Congress of Maoming, Mr Zhu Yuying, has pleaded guilty to selling government contracts and official positions for approximately 18 million yuan (HK$22.1 million) in bribes.
Mr Yuying was quoted by officials as saying: “I didn’t dare to accept bribes at the beginning […] But in my 50s, I found my family were extemely poor compared to others. I started to accept bribes from 2006 and couldn’t stop because bribegivers would be angry if I didn’t accept their money”.
The deputy director of Guangdong’s partydiscipline department, Mr Lin Haokun, blamed Maoming’s high levels of corruption on a power structure that placed too much authority in the hands of a few party bosses and bureau chiefs, as well as a shortage of effective anti-corruption mechanisms.
