The long-awaited reporting date for the Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Senate Committee's inquiry into the comprehensive revision of Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979 (Cth) has again been extended. The reporting date is now 18 March 2015 (the last extension was to 3 December 2014).
In December 2013, the Committee was asked to review whether comprehensive revision of the Interception Act should be undertaken.
As noted in the September Telecommunications Regulatory Update, the key areas contemplated by the revision and expected to be addressed in the report include expanding interception powers for security reasons and mandatory rules for local infrastructure protection in light of cyber security concerns.
