Giovanni Buttarelli, the European Data Protection Supervisor (the EDPS), has highlighted the need for moral integrity when exploiting the benefits of new technological developments.

An Ethics Advisory Board is to be responsible for analysing the potential ethical implications of changes in the digital era, and will be made up of "distinguished persons from the fields of ethics and philosophy, sociology, psychology, technology and economics" alongside experts from areas more routinely associated with EU policy development, such as "health, transport and energy, social interaction and media, economy and finance, governance and democracy and security and policing."
