On December 9, 2015, the Ontario Legislature passed into law Bill 153, An Act to recognize the corporate structure of the Metis by enacting the Métis Nation of Ontario Secretariat Act, 2015. The Act will come into force on January 1, 2016.

The Métis Nation of Ontario Secretariat is the corporate and administrative arm of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO). The Secretariat's members are the citizens of the MNO.

The Act legislatively recognizes the MNO's existing governance structure, a structure which operates at a local, regional and provincial level. Ultimately, the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010 with modifications will apply to the Secretariat.

Although the Bill received the support of all three major political parties, the Act is not without controversy within the Métis community. Some have expressed concern with the lack of consultation with all MNO, and other Métis, citizens in advance of passing the Bill.

The Act should not impact directly a proponent's engagement of MNO when identified as an affected Aboriginal community.
