From 1 July 2012 Australian carbon credits and other international emissions units will be considered financial products under the (Australian) Corporations Act 2001. Anyone dealing with carbon or emissions units in Australia will therefore need to check whether they are required to obtain an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) to trade in these units.
