The government's legislative plans were recently outlined in the Queen's Speech. These include the following bills relating to IP, IT, Media and Telecoms:

  • Extremism Bill - in order to combat the ongoing threat of extremism, the government are looking to strengthen the role of Ofcom so that it is able to take measures against channels that broadcast extremist content; and
  • Investigatory Powers Bill - on the basis of the previous Communications Data Bill (which was blocked by the Liberal Democrats), it is likely this bill will include an extension of communications service providers' data retention requirements under the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act 2014 to other types of data (such as in the context of social media).
