On November 20, 2015, Hong Kong International Arbitration Center (“HKIAC”) announced the opening of a representative office in Shanghai, making HKIAC the first official offshore arbitration institution in mainland China.

Located in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, HKIAC’s Shanghai representative office will provide on-the-ground support to its Chinese users and consolidate relationships with Chinese arbitration commissions, and it aims at boosting arbitration in China-related disputes.

Although it is certainly a milestone in the development of international arbitration in China, HKIAC’s Shanghai representative office will not offer case management services in the mainland.
