Italy – Government announces the deployment of broadband throughout the whole Italian territory by 2020 On 7 April 2016, the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi announced the deployment of the broadband plan together with Enel, the state-owned power company. Mr. Renzi announced that the goal of the plan is to cover by 2020 the whole Italian territory with broadband services at 30 mbps speed and reaching 50% of 100 mbps subscriptions. The plan will be deployed together with Enel, which will have a significant role in the deployment of the network also thanks to the deep penetration of its power network. Enel plans to invest gradually up to EUR 2.5 billion in network development, with the possibility for other entities to participate in the investment. This plan is part of the Italian digital agenda strategy, and its launch should be able to provide a significant boost to the digitalization of Italy and, consequently, to the Italian digital market.
