Last week, the City of Portland filed a lawsuit in federal court against the short-term vacation rental business HomeAway.com Inc. for short-term rental code violations, according to an oregonlive.com report. When efforts to resolve the matter out of court did not work, the city filed suit seeking $2.5 million dollars in damages.

This lawsuit serves as a reminder to anyone engaged in commercial enterprise to be cognizant of federal, state and local rules and regulations that may affect their business.
