The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled in the case of Satakunnan Markkinaporissi and Satamedia v Republic of Finland that a magazine who had published publicly available tax data could be prevented from doing so in order to protect the privacy rights of individuals. The ECHR ruling confirmed that there is no overall protection for journalism under data protection legislation. Equally, the importance of the public interest value of the publications and its significant role in the court’s reasoning were also re-emphasised.
