In follow up to our story from May 20, 2013, a federal judge has sentenced former Illinois attorney and one-time radio host Kathleen Niew for her involvement in a fraud she perpetrated on clients. Niew pleaded guilty to the fraud last year.
The primary allegations against Niew were that she led an Illinois couple to believe she would hold money in trust for them, while she was actually using the money for herself- financing gold mining operations around the globe.
Last week, Judge Harry Leinenweber sentenced Niew to five years and ten months in prison, and ordered her to pay her clients $2.34 million in restitution.
In addressing the court, Niew stated that it was her fault the money was gone, and asked for forgiveness from the victims.
