The High Court quashed a four month suspension imposed by a conduct and competence committee of the Nursing & Midwifery Council and substituted a sanction of striking off. On application forms for nursing training and, a few years later, registration as a nurse, W failed to disclose that he had previously changed his name, and that he had a number of criminal convictions, including two for armed robbery. The court found that the committee had failed to appreciate that the overriding factor to take into account was the public interest, and the standards which the public interest would expect had been manifestly broken.
