On January 4, 2016, the federal government changed its own contract retention obligations.  FAR 4.805 was amended to simplify the federal government's own contract records retention policy as it affects procurement contracts issued by executive agencies.  The new rules do not, however, affect contracts issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, the United States Mint, or legislative or judicial agencies, unless expressly adopted.  They also do not affect the contractor's record retention obligations applicable to procurement contracts, found at FAR 4.7. 

The federal government's new retention policy no longer mandates different retention periods for contracts based on award amount, amount over or under the simplified acquisition threshold, or classification as a construction contract.
