The Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) announced that it will actively enforce the new cookie rules that entered into force this week. Under this new legislation, it is required that users actively consent to the placement of cookies on their device, although exceptions apply to cookies that have little or no impact on users’ privacy. Furthermore, new legislation provides for a ban on the use of cookie walls by public agencies.

The ACM states that now that the new statutory framework is clear, the ACM will take enforcement measures where necessary. Companies that do not comply with the new rules, risk a € 450,000 fine per violation.
