On 8 September 2015, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (the “SIAC”) announced the establishment of the SIAC Users Council, which will provide feedback on the SIAC Rules and international arbitration process from a user’s perspective. The members of the Users Council are from over 30 jurisdictions and are from both the commercial and investment sectors. The global reach of the members of the Users Council will maximise the efficacy of the SIAC’s ongoing efforts to adopt and develop best practices in international arbitration. Leading international arbitration practitioners and arbitrators are also part of the Users Council.
The SIAC has begun the process of reviewing its Arbitration Rules. A revised version is expected in mid-2016. The Rules revision will take into account recent developments in international arbitration practice and procedure, and is aimed at better serving the needs of the businesses, financial institutions and governments that use the SIAC. The SIAC Users Council will play a key role in this process of revision.
The President of the SIAC Court of Arbitration, Gary Born, said that the Users Council is “a central element of our continuing efforts to maintain SIAC’s leadership in international arbitration”.
