On January 20th 2016, the Ministerial Council announced the appointment of Mr. Giorgos Pitsilis to the position of General Secretary of Public Revenue. Following the departure of Ms. Katerina Savvaidou on October 2015, the Ministry of Finance commenced a selection process for the best candidate. As opposed to the other two candidates, who are acting officers at the General Secretariat, Mr. Pitsilis has a long career in the private sector as a prominent lawyer specialized in tax-related matters and also as a tax advisor of the Hellenic Bank Union.

His experience in both tax and financial issues is expected to give him a valuable insight into major issues which need to be addressed by the General Secretariat of Public Revenue. In his inaugural speech, the new General Secretary set a goal to improve the services provided by the Tax Administration by means of expanding the range of online tax services as well as by simplifying tax compliance. Moreover, fair interpretation of tax laws along with assistance by the tax administration in tax dispute resolution will also be treated with high priority. Last but not least, Mr. Pitsilis underlined the importance of autonomy for the General Secretariat, which is considered as a prerequisite in order to combat tax evasion and increase revenue collection.
