Commission speaks on EU growth: Jonathan Hill has spoken on EU growth. He focused on:

  • the need for regulators to make use of the review clauses in new regulatory legislation to ensure the correct balance between reducing risks to the financial system and fostering growth;
  • the continued need to ensure that regulation takes account of different national and sector business models; and
  • the dangers posed by new and future risks such as cyber-crime, the resolution of non-bank financial institutions and increasingly aged populations.

He then spoke at length on the problem of slow growth, particularly within the Eurozone. He explained how the Commission has launched an "Investment Plan" and set up the Capital Markets Union to help to address a shortage of funding and investment for business expansion. He particularly highlighted the positive role these two initiatives are intended to play in ensuring that adequate sources of funding are accessible to SMEs.
